This course is offered in two modules and introduces a range of visual arts concepts and hands-on practice of media including drawing and videography as a means to explore how we see what we see. The class includes a student-produced exhibition of the term’s work.

FLM 261 Production Practicum I - 1 credit

Students gain valuable experience working on pre-production or serving as on-set production assistants. In Winter term 2022, students have the opportunity work on a short film co-produced by RSA and Prairie College. Student working in pre-production will be asked to commit appr. 40 hours through February and March. Students working as an on-set production assistant will commit appr. 40 hours over two or three weekends in April and/or May.

GEN 101 First Aid - 1 credit

A course providing First Aid certification, including CPR/AED, to prepare students in dealing effectively with accident and injury situations, especially in consideration of work with a variety of tools and other hazardous materials. This class may be taken with a regular class schedule or as part of a continuing education programme in one of the surrounding communities. If a student already has his or her certification, upon proof of such certification, this class will not be required.

GEN 170 West Coast Theatre Trip - 1 credit

The Theatre Foundations ensemble, led by staff guides, take an 8-10 day excursion in early February to British Columbia. Students see a number of theatre productions, with special attention given to Pacific Theatre in Vancouver and Chemainus Theatre Festival on Vancouver Island, two Christian-based professional companies. In addition, there are workshops, visits to art galleries, and time given to explore other attractions and the natural beauty (and the relatively warmer climate) of the West Coast. Students are required to write and submit a journal of their experiences and reflections after returning to Rosebud.

GEN 250 Bibliograph - 1 credit

Through personal readings, students acquaint themselves with books, articles, and web sites dealing with subjects of professional interest. Tutorials guide the student to producing a thoroughly annotated bibliography. The MP1 bibliography focusses on the Western canon; MP2 on current developments; and MP3 on a topic of the student’s own choosing.

GEN 370 International Theatre Trip - 2 credits

As part of the educational experience of Mentorship level 1 and 2, students participate in a two-week field trip to one of the two major theatrical centres in the English-speaking world – London or New York. Students attend world-class theatre, participate in workshops and talk-backs with West End and Broadway professionals, and go on backstage tours of theatres like the Metropolitan Opera House or the Royal National Theatre. The London trip includes a visit to the new Globe Theatre and travel to Stratford-upon-Avon. The international theatre trip offers a more global picture and a wider scope of the international theatre community. Students experience immersion in another culture with the opportunity to broaden their professional perspective.

GEN 470 Grad Panel - 1 credits

Graduating students demonstrate their acquired knowledge in the field of their major to a panel of artists drawn from Rosebud and the broader arts community. The panel reviews and evaluates the student on their Bibliography, Final Project, Portfolio, and anything else the panel deems relevant.

Students observe the day-to-day work of theatre practitioners. The purpose of job shadowing is to give students insight into the wide variety of employment and opportunities within the broad spectrum of both community and professional theatre. For approximately 40 hours the student will job shadow one or two practitioners at a particular organization, such as a church, school, camp, theatre company, etc.

A practicum for students who love working with community drama or music programs and who demonstrate ability in directing or assistant directing musical and dramatic works for a specific group. Students with an interest in administration may complete this course in managing or assistant managing a performance project under the guidance of a supervisor and mentor.

This is an exciting opportunity for students with a keen interest in helping teenage performers reach their artistic potential. Assistants supervise residential living for the Canadian Badlands Summer School in Drumheller and assist various workshop leaders during this programme.

This practicum course is intended for students who love working with children and who demonstrate leadership ability in spiritual formation. This course is offered in special arrangement with an existing camp ministry.

This is an opportunity for students to practice their craft in a setting other than Rosebud Theatre. Work study projects must be approved by the education team.

In their final year, students may complete an internship with a host institution, such as a school, church, camp, or theatre, approved by RSA. The internship enables students to live and work in their main area of interest and develop greater confidence in their chosen profession. The internship is up to four months long and will be evaluated by the supervisor on site.

Workshops designed to explore topics in Marketing.

Based on the premise that a successful artist needs business skills in addition to honing their craft, this course offers tools for marketing oneself in the industry and obtaining work in the arts. Module 1 covers marketing fundamentals. Module 2 covers business practices for the freelance artist. Module 3 offers auditioning workshops and networking opportunities with the industry.

This course consists of two components: The first is an introduction to basic marketing terminology and strategies. The second component is a hands-on marketing project through which students learn how to handle the administrative, public relations and financial responsibilities in the running of a mini-promotion campaign for a product or service currently offered by Rosebud School of the Arts or Rosebud Theatre.

Before their grad panel, graduating students must present a portfolio documenting significant achievements in their field of study. The portfolio, including a resume and CV, should be up-to-date and produced according to industry standards.

Workshops designed to explore different elements of music with an eye to supplementing the student’s practicum coursework.

This course provides the vocabulary and exercises needed to orient students to the rudiments of music theory. It is intended to compliment student participation in choir and other opportunities for music performance throughout the year. Students with music experience are welcome to challenge the Royal Conservatory exam before taking the class.

This course provides individual instruction on a musical instrument.

In this course students learn conducting patterns for simple and compound time, entrances, cut-offs, fermatas, and expressive use of the left hand.

This course prepares students for the Royal Conservatory of Music grade III history exam. The curriculum serves as an introduction to Western music of the Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and 20th Century. Through studying the lives and musical contributions of selected composers and analysis of representative works, students gain an understanding of the musical style of each era.

Unlock your inner song under the experienced guidance of a producer-songwriter.

Students need to have some proficiency on an accompanying instrument – such as piano, ukulele, or guitar – or have special permission from the instructor.

This course provides individual instruction on a musical instrument. Students are expected to commit to a rigorous practice schedule. Non-music students may register for this course with approval from the head of music.

Thirteen lessons of one hour.

These singing lessons focus on healthy voice production and its relation to musical theatre. Min. 12 lessons of 30 minutes.

Students join community members in this choir. As a class, it develops vocal and musical sensitivity by singing large choral works of the historical “Masters”. Past works include the works of J.S. Bach, Vivaldi, Haydn, Telemann, Rutter, Camille Saint-Saens, Schubert, and opera selections from Wagner, Bizet, Verdi, and Purcell.

This choral ensemble includes Certificate and Mentorship students (and occasionally staff members). It offers skill development in harmony, phrasing, pitch, dynamics and tone, and prepares students for performance where group singing is required.

Credit for this course may be obtained by participating in an advanced auditioned choral ensemble such as Rosa Cantorum.

During the run of a show at Rosebud Theatre, the student performs selected genres and styles of music for the dinner theatre patrons as a member of the dinner music ensemble.

Accompany a performance on the piano, guitar, or other musical instrument. Opportunities include accompaniment for children’s choir or vocal coaching.

Explore your creativity in the medium of music recording. This introductory course guides students through the process of modern song arrangement, while teaching fundamental skills of recording such as building layers, editing, creating a basic mix, and more.

Students earn credit for designing sound for a small or independent project, such as a student project.

Direct a short musical work. Previous opportunities have included musical direction for children’s choir, dinner music, dinner music ensemble, and the Rosebud Chorale. By invitation.

As a "composer's kitchen" this course explores creating music that includes textures/found sound/nature-based soundscapes to serve as a soundtrack for Story.

Rehearsal and public performance of a solo or ensemble work.

A continuation of MUS 210 and MUS 211 Rudiments of Music Theory grade I and II, this course culminates in the Royal Conservatory of Music exam.

One-on-one singing lessons focused on developing the student’s vocal technique and musical sensitivity. Min. 12 lessons of 45 minutes.

Advanced music students work in the Rosebud recording studio under supervision of an experienced sound engineer.

A practicum designed for advanced students. Students serve as music director for a production at Rosebud Theatre, theatre 359, or another approved company, holding the responsibility for communicating their vision and mandate to the artists, and using the supervisor merely as a resource. By invitation.

In the student’s final year, the final recital showcases the student’s skills in solo performance on their main instrument. The recital emphasizes initiative, making and meeting deadlines, while integrating skills learned throughout the student’s Mentorship programme. The recital should include a program with written program notes.A proposal must be submitted and approved by the education team. Students may access the school’s resources, but ultimately they must demonstrate financial prudence through a balanced budget. Any profit or loss will be borne by the student.The music director and a final project supervisor provide guidance throughout the process. The final recital results in a public presentation that will be critiqued by evaluators appointed by the education team.

This is a reading and discussion class based on theological writings about the spiritual disciplines (i.e. Scripture, prayer, meditation, service). This class offers a context for engaging questions about the core of Christian faith and an intentional practice of cultivating one’s spiritual foundation.

In addition to formal instruction, this class incorporates small group discussion. The class will explore five distinct streams in church history and foster an awareness of different spiritual disciplines within the Christian tradition. Students are encouraged to grow in their personal faith experience and to reach across denominational boundaries.

This course explores the broad conversation of how a Christian world-view intersects with Art making. Through readings, group discussion and assignments, students are challenged to examine their assumptions about faith and art, recognize the role of art in culture, articulate their understanding and engage the challenges and opportunities for artists in the post-modern age.

Faith and Art looks at truth and truthtelling through various art languages. Inspiration is drawn from works by artists of faith and discussion and in class exploration center on the voice of the artist interfacing with contemporary culture. Students are encouraged to articulate their core values through journal/scrapbooking, reading and discussion, performance art, essay writing and collaborative work.

This course offers a focused and challengingopening to the day in preparing the mind and body for the dynamic - and attimes uncomfortable - process of self-discovery.  This class hopes todevelop generous expression along with bold and free exploration to the day’swork. The scope of each session will range from solo to group work, on aphysically-rigorous to still-and-introspective scale.

These are workshops designed to explore different elements of theatre practice with an eye to supplementing the student’s practicum coursework.

This class initiates students to the world oftheatre production. Starting with learning basic terminology and safetypractices, and reinforced with readings and hands-on experience, the courseilluminates the practical and artistic demands of bringing a production tolife. The practicum component of this course is 60 hours of assisting theproduction team of Rosebud Theatre, spread over two terms.

This lecture-based class introduces studentsto various genres of dramatic literature. Through reading plays students learnto recognize the structure of action in the story, the authorial intent behindthe play, and appreciate the rigorous challenges faced in transforming words onthe page into vital story-telling on the stage.

This studio class immerses the ensemble inthe fundamental components of Acting. Through regular practice of games andexercises, the ensemble explores the spirit of play, honest connection, and theemotional and physical risks that acting demands.

This studio class engages scenework on twentieth-century plays to translate words into action in partnership with another actor. Students explore the actor’s process through a combination of terminology, rehearsal techniques and game-based exercises. The course is offered in two modules, each worth 1.5 credits.

This studio class covers a broad range of topics and techniques, from how our bodies produce sound to speaking heightened texts from Shakespeare and the Bible. Students practice the discipline of clear, precise articulation, and core goal of connecting our hearts and minds to achieve, clear, compelling communication.

This studio class is offered in two modules, fall and winter, each worth 1.5 credits. The first module emphasizes improvised choreography through body awareness and a range of explorations and approaches to movement as a language of expression. The second module focuses on choreographed movement and dance, covering many styles and creating pieces for large groups, duets, and solos, culminating in a dance show presented on the BMO Studio Stage.

This studio class offers an introduction tovarious elements of theatre design, including costume, set, lighting, and sounddesign. Theoretical projects offer students a chance at practicing scenicdesign under the supervision of a professional designer.

A continuation of topics covered in THR 110,this course allows students to get more in-depth in a number of areas oftechnical theatre and attempt, outside of production stresses, some of thetasks and skills used in production tasks. The course is offered in twomodules, fall and winter, each worth 1.5 credits.

A survey of theatre’s first records incontext of religious observances, with an emphasis on the forms developed inancient Greece and Rome, Medieval and Renaissance Europe, and non-Westernperformance traditions. The course is offered in two modules, fall and winter,each worth 1.5 credits.

A survey of the major periods and styles of theatre in context of statehood and nation building. The course traces theatrical developments in different countries with an emphasis on English-language texts, culminating in a post-colonial assessment of artistic expression. In this performance-based class, students learn about intention, design, staging, and performing in the context of a Rosebud church service or RSA chapel. They look at the expression of faith and art through the eyes of a minister, a planner, a participant, and a storyteller. Most class time is used in rehearsal and performance, including experimentation with writing, directing, leading music, choreography and stage management, depending on desire, availability, and the ever-present challenge of time.

With an assigned acting coach and scene partner, students work one-on-one for an hour and a half a week, focusing on actor development in intense scene work, moving from the page to the stage. Min. 12 lessons of 1.5 hours each.

Pre-requisite: THR 130 Acting Foundations and THR 132 Beginner Scene Study

This course offers students a variety of skills and disciplines to engage their physical instrument. Topics include choreography, stage combat, authentic movement, and more.

Building on the skills gained in THR 150, this course specializes in one or more aspects of Theatre Design. Theoretical projects guided by a working designer compose the bulk of the course.

An introduction to core aspects of theatre management in preparation for managing projects or giving administrative leadership. Recommended for students in Mentorship Theatre Arts, the course welcomes anyone with an interest in starting their own production company, working behind the scenes, and learning how administrative structures support the creative process.

This course is built around the student’s demonstrated proficiencies and particular interests in specific areas of technical theatre, such as lighting, scenic art, costumes, and props. Students expand and hone their skills in a variety of different environments under the supervision of professional artists and technicians.

Students train in various approaches to acting, focusing on the particular specialty of the instructor. Topics include Shakespeare, Mask, Restoration, Musical Theatre, and more.

The study of acting through the analysis and enactment of scripted scenes, focusing on characterization and complexity of language.

This class covers basic playwriting techniques through readings, lecture, and practical application, taught via email correspondence and culminating in a reading of a one-act play at the Budding Playwrights Festival.

This class introduces students to the principles of directing through assigned readings and a guided preparation of a directing project, covering fundamentals of play analysis, directorial concept, design concept, marketing, casting, rehearsal planning, and delegation.

The project is a public live performance of an independent production emphasizing initiative, the making and meeting of deadlines, and the integration of various skills learned throughout the student’s Mentorship program. Students will be expected to self-produce this project and be responsible for managing the budget, the marketing efforts, and all personnel involved in the production. A project supervisor provides guidance throughout the process and is critiqued by evaluators appointed by the education team.
