Art
ART 140 Visual Interpretation - 3 credits
The visual dimension of theatre arts is immensely diverse, intricate, and essential – indeed, theatre does not exist without it. This course serves as an introduction to the fundamental principles of visual arts within a theatrical context. Through lectures, studio labs, and field trips, students will develop their visual “eye” and learn the visual vocabulary. The course will cover basic drawing techniques, colour theory, and design principles culminating with a public showing of student work.
ART 240 Art Tutorial - 1 credit
A guided study in a student’s area of interest in the visual arts.
General
GEN 100 Life Skills - No credit
A weekly 1.5-hour class that helps students live independently and do it successfully. Topics include: Residence Life, Study Skills, Money Management, Etiquette, President of Your Life, Conflict Resolution, and more.
GEN 101 First Aid - 1 credit
A course providing First Aid Certification to prepare students to deal effectively with accident and injury situations, especially in consideration of work done with a variety of tools and other hazardous materials. This class may be taken with a regular class schedule or as part of a continuing education programme in one of the surrounding communities, depending upon the number of other students taking the course and the timetable available. If a student already has his or her certification, upon proof of such certification, this class will not be required.
GEN 170 West Coast Theatre Trip - 1 credit
This trip gives first-year students an introduction to some of the theatre that happens in western Canada, with an emphasis on the Christian-oriented theatre companies such as Pacific Theatre and Chemainus Theatre. In addition to seeing various shows and attending workshops with theatre professionals, the students may also participate in alternative styles of worship, and tour art galleries.
GEN 250 Bibliography - 1 credit
Through personal readings, students acquaint themselves with books, articles, and web sites dealing with subjects of professional interest. Tutorials guide the student to producing a thoroughly annotated bibliography.
GEN 355 Conference Attendance - No credit
Students attend a professional conference pertaining to their field of study.
GEN 370 International Theatre Trip - 2 credits
As part of the educational experience of Mentorship Level I and Level II, students have the opportunity to participate in a two-week field trip to one of the two major theatrical centres in the English-speaking world – London or New
York. Students attend world-class theatre, participate in workshops and talk-backs with West End or Broadway professionals, and go on backstage tours of theatres like the Metropolitan Opera House or the Royal National Theatre.
The London trip includes a visit to the new Globe Theatre and travel to Stratford-on-Avon. The International Theatre Trip offers a more global picture and a wider scope of the international theatre community. Students experience immersion in another culture with the opportunity to broaden their professional perspective.
(Credit for this course is restricted to students in Mentorship Level I and II)
GEN 465 Teaching Assistant - 1 credit
Advanced students assist an instructor in teaching beginner students for the duration of one term.
GEN 470 Oral Exam - 1 credit
Graduating students demonstrate their acquired knowledge in the field of their major to a panel of artists drawn from Rosebud and the broader arts community. The panel reviews and evaluates the student on their Bibliography, Final Project, Portfolio, and anything else the panel deems relevant.
Interdisciplinary
INT 101 Topics in Community Arts Development - No credit
Workshops designed to explore various topics in community arts development.
INT 150 Job Shadowing - 1 credit
Students observe the day-to-day work of community drama practitioners. The purpose of job shadowing is to give students insight into the complex organization of community theatre and its relation to the funding agency (for example, a church board). For approximately 40 hours (for example, five hours for eight weeks), the student will job shadow two drama directors at two different venues: church, school, camp, etc.
INT 360 Children’s Choir Directing - 1 credit
A practicum for students who love working with children and who demonstrate ability in directing or assistant directing musical and dramatic works with a young age group.
INT 365 Summer School Assistant - 3 credits
This is an exciting opportunity for students with a keen interest in helping teenage performers reach their artistic potential. Assistants supervise residential living for the Canadian Badlands Summer School in Drumheller and assist various workshop leaders during this programme.
INT 370 Camp Ministries - 3 credits
This practicum course is intended for students who love working with children and who demonstrate leadership ability in spiritual formation. This course is offered in special arrangement with an existing camp ministry.
INT 380 Applied Studies - 3 credits
This is an opportunity for students to practice their craft in a setting other than Rosebud Theatre. Work study projects must be approved by the Education Department before starting date.
INT 489 Internship - 6 credits
In their final year, students may complete an internship with a host institution, such as a school, church, camp, or theatre, approved by RSA. The Internship enables students to live, work, and breathe their main area of interest and develop greater confidence in their chosen profession before graduation. The Internship is up to four months long and will be evaluated by the supervisor on site.
Marketing
MKT 321 The Business of Show Biz - 1 credit
This course serves as an introduction to obtaining work in the arts. Depending on the student’s major, topics to be covered include auditioning, Fringe festivals, grant application, unions, networking, and more.
MKT 350 Marketing in the Arts - 3 credits
This course consists of two components: The first is an introduction to basic marketing terminology and strategies. The second component is a hands-on Marketing Project through which students learn how to handle the administrative, public relations and financial responsibilities in the running of a mini-promotion campaign for a product or service currently offered by Rosebud School of the Arts or Rosebud Theatre.
MKT 470 Portfolio - 1 credit
Before their Oral Exam, graduating students must present a portfolio documenting significant achievements in their field of study. The portfolio is intended to serve as a permanent document to aid in presentations to future employers. The portfolio should be up-to-date and produced according to industry standards. A resume and headshot must be included for music, acting, and stage management students.

MUS 101 Topics in Music - No credit
Workshops designed to explore different elements of music with an eye to supplementing the student’s practicum coursework.
MUS 110 Preliminary Music Theory - 1 credit
This course is designed for students with little or no musical experience. Students learn the rudiments of music theory with an eye to enhancing their performance in musical theatre and choir. Course completion is based on the Royal Conservatory Exam. Students are welcome to challenge the exam before undertaking the class.
MUS 210 Rudiments of Music Theory - Grade I - 1 credit
Course completion is based on the Royal Conservatory Exam.
MUS 211 Rudiments of Music Theory - Grade II - 1 credit
Course completion is based on the Royal Conservatory Exam.
MUS 235 Primary Applied Music - 2 credits
This course provides students with individual instruction on a musical instrument. Students are expected to commit to a rigorous practice schedule. Non-music students may register for this course with approval from the Music Director.
MUS 240 Voice Coaching I - 1 credit
The study and practice of singing, with an emphasis on proper singing technique, communicating the heart and meaning of a song, auditions, and singing problems as they pertain to the individual. This class has a private voice coaching component.

MUS 251 Masterworks Choir - 1 credit
Also known as the Rosebud Community Choir, this class develops vocal and musical sensitivity by singing large choral works of the “Masters.”
MUS 252 Rosebud Chorale - 1 credit
The Rosebud Chorale trains the voice using ensemble pieces. Skill development in phrasing, pitch, dynamics, and tone prepares students for roles in which singing in ensemble is required.
MUS 253 Ensemble Choir - 1 credit
Credit for this course may be obtained by participating in an advanced auditioned choral ensemble such as Rosa Cantorum.
MUS 259 Dinner Music Ensemble - 1 credit
During the run of a show at Rosebud Theatre, the student performs selected genres and styles of music for the dinner theatre patrons as a member of the Dinner Music Ensemble.
MUS 260 Accompaniment - 1 credit
Accompany a performance on the piano, guitar, or other musical instrument. Previous opportunities have included accompaniment for Children’s Choir, Dinner Music Ensemble, and Rosebud Theatre productions.
MUS 262 Sound Design I - 1 credit
Students earn credit for designing sound for a small or independent project, such as a student project.
MUS 265 Musical Direction I - 1 credit
Direct a short musical work. Previous opportunities have included musical direction for Children’s Choir, Dinner Music, Dinner Music Ensemble, and the Rosebud Chorale.
MUS 320 Harmony III - 3 credits
Course completion is based on the Royal Conservatory Exam.
MUS 340 Voice Coaching II - 1 credit
This course consists of one-on-one voice coaching session focused on developing the student’s vocal technique and musical sensitivity.

MUS 362 Sound Design II - 3 credits
This is an opportunity for advanced students to produce sound for a show. As theatre apprentices, students will abide by the policies and procedures of the Theatre Department and fulfill the relevant job description outlined in the Theatre Manual.
MUS 365 Musical Direction II - 3 credits

MUS 462 Sound Recording - 3 credits
Advanced music students work in the Rosebud Recording Studio under supervision of an experienced sound engineer.
MUS 465 Musical Direction III - 6 credits
This is a practicum designed for advanced students. Students serve as Music Director for one production at Rosebud Theatre, using the supervisor merely as a resource. As theatre apprentices, students abide by the policies and procedures of the Theatre Department and fulfill the relevant job description outlined in the Theatre Manual.
MUS 489 Final Recital - 6 credits
In the student’s final year, the Final Recital showcases the student’s skills in solo performance on their main instrument. The recital emphasizes initiative, making and meeting deadlines, while integrating skills learned throughout the student’s Mentorship Programme. The recital should include a program with written program notes.
A proposal must be submitted and approved by the Education Department. Students may access the school’s resources, but ultimately they must demonstrate financial prudence through a balanced budget. Any profit or loss will be borne by the student.
The Music Director and a final project supervisor provide guidance throughout the process. The Final Recital results in a public presentation that will be critiqued by evaluators appointed by the Education Department.
Religion
REL 110 Introduction to Spiritual Formation - 1 credit
Through lecture and practical application, this course offers a context within which students engage questions of faith and explore foundations of spiritual disciplines.
REL 120 Topics in Spiritual Formation - 3 credits
In addition to formal instruction, this class incorporates small group discussion. The class will explore five distinct streams in church history and foster an awareness of different spiritual disciplines within the Christian tradition. Students are encouraged to grow in their personal faith experience and to reach across denominational boundaries.
REL 121 Christianity and the Arts - 3 credits
This is an exploration of the relationship between the Christian faith and disciplines within the arts. Students are encouraged to consider the topic from a variety of different assumptions and to begin formulating their personal response.
REL 321 Faith and Art - 3 credits
This class is an advanced seminar of readings and lectures intended to challenge students to think through the integration of faith and art.

Theatre
THR 101 Topics in Theatre Practice - No credit
These are workshops designed to explore different elements of theatre practice with an eye to supplementing the student’s practicum coursework.
THR 110 Introduction to Technical Theatre - 3 credits
This class introduces students to various aspects of theatre production and to basic theatre terminology. Weekly readings are assigned covering different areas of production, including stage management, costumes, properties, stage craft, sound, lights, and tool safety. The practicum component of this course consists of assisting the production crew of Rosebud Theatre.
THR 125 Script Analysis - 3 credits
This class introduces students to various genres and structures of dramatic literature. Through reading play texts and attending live theatre, students learn to appreciate the distinct challenges faced by actors, designers, and directors in transforming the literary text into a theatrical performance.
THR 130 Acting Foundations - 3 credits
This studio class introduces the students to fundamental techniques of acting, using very basic exercises such as improvisation, trust exercises, objective games, etc. to stimulate the mind and body.
THR 132 Beginner Scene Study - 3 credits
This studio class uses play texts to help students develop character and become conversant with acting terminology – for example: beat, unit, objective, strategy, tactic, etc.

THR 135 Oral Communication - 3 credits
This studio class introduces students to the dramatic interpretation of literary texts, including scripture, poetry, narrative, dialogue, etc., and the proper use of speech and diction.
THR 141 Movement - 3 credits
This studio class introduces the students to body awareness, techniques for using the body as an expressive medium, and the fundamentals of dance.
THR 150 Design Foundations - 3 credits
Building on the brief view of the topic provided in THR 110, THR 150 gives students an opportunity to learn the practical skills involved in Theatre Design including drafting and model building as well as a chance to practice the art by designing theoretical projects under the supervision of the instructor.
THR 210 Topics in Stage Craft - 3 credits
A continuation of topics covered in THR 110, this course allows students to get more in-depth in a number of areas of technical theatre and attempt, outside of production stresses, some of the tasks and skills used in production tasks.

THR 220 Speech and Text - 1 credit
The study and practice of speech with an emphasis on the execution of texts from classical and other sources.

A survey of the major periods and styles of theatre from the ancient Greeks to the Renaissance.

THR 230 Topics in Acting - 3 credits

THR 232 Intermediate Scene Study - 3 credits
The study of acting through the analysis and enactment of scripted scenes, focusing on characterization and the complexity of language.

THR 235 Drama Ministry - 3 credits
This course is intended to prepare students to apply drama to Christian ministry. It includes a brief overview of Church and Theatre, i.e. chancel drama, street evangelism, and social awareness theatre. The course culminates in a presentation of student-created work.
THR 240 Acting Coaching I - 1 credit
The study and practice of acting, with an emphasis on monologues, auditions, and acting problems as they pertain to the individual. This class has a private acting coaching component.

THR 241 Topics in Dance - 1 credit
Practical studies in various forms of dance, with an emphasis on dance styles commonly used in musical theatre and contemporary theatre.

This course is built around the student’s demonstrated proficiencies and particular interests in specific areas of technical theatre. Students expand and hone their skills in a variety of different environments under the supervision of professional artists and technicians.

This class covers basic playwriting techniques through readings, lecture, and practical application.
THR 335 Introduction to Directing - 3 credits
This class introduces students to the principles of directing through assigned readings and a guided preparation of a directing project, covering fundamentals of play analysis, directorial concept, design concept, marketing, casting, rehearsal planning, and delegation.

THR 340 Acting Coaching II - 1 credit
These intense one-on-one sessions helps students increase their dramatic range and develop their creative and imaginative instincts.

THR 359 Theatre Production and Performance -
6 credits
Research, rehearsal, design, staging, and presentation of a scripted play by an acting ensemble, to be performed as part of the Studio Stage series. Students can expect to spend a minimum of 120 hours in rehearsal and 90 hours in production.

THR 360 Theatre Management and Administration - 2 credits
Students complete a practicum in theatre management or administration under the guidance of a supervisor and mentor.

THR 371 Performance of a Role II - 3 credits
Students earn credit for performing a lead role in a non-professional show, such as college production, or performing a small role on a professional stage, such as Rosebud Theatre.
THR 461 Production Practicum III - 6 credits
A practicum designed for advanced students. Students take responsibility for a specific production area, such as props, costumes, set construction, or another area, for a Rosebud Theatre show. As theatre apprentices, students abide by the policies and procedures of the Theatre Department and fulfill the relevant job description outlined in the Theatre Manual.
THR 467 Stage Management III - 6 credits
Students practice advanced skill in Stage Management, and will likely be expected to serve in a supervisory role. As theatre apprentices, students abide by the policies and procedures of the Theatre Department and fulfill the relevant job description outlined in the Theatre Manual.
THR 470 Directing Assistant - 3 credits
Students learn fundamental directing techniques by assisting the director during the production of one show at Rosebud Theatre or an approved project.

THR 471 Performance of a Role III - 6 credits
Students earn credit for performing a substantial role on a professional stage.
THR 489 Final Project - 6 credits
The Final Project is a self-produced work in the student’s major, 20 minutes in length, completed during the final year of the student’s programme. It emphasizes initiative, making and meeting deadlines, and integrating skills learned throughout the student’s Mentorship Programme.
In addition to producing, the student will serve in at least one other area of production such as acting (acting majors), stage managing (stage management majors), construction or design (tech majors), writing or directing (dramatic arts), etc. With approval, the Final Project may be combined with an Internship.
A project supervisor provides guidance throughout the process. The Final Project results in a public presentation that will be critiqued by evaluators appointed by the Education Department
